Future upgrades coming to Fairport’s Main St. district

FAIRPORT, N.Y. (WROC) – News 8 is learning more about upcoming improvements coming to the village of Fairport, which will be focused on the historic Main Street Corridor.

The work is expected to begin next spring, with a hopeful completion by the end of 2025.

It’s made possible by a $4 million federal grant and a $1 million dollar investment from the village. But first, the design phase begins.

New renderings lay out plans to restore the walkability of Fairport’s Main Street. However, they’re not necessarily new plans as the streetscape improvements were initially mapped out in 2016.

“This has been included in our capital plan for many years. We’ve just been waiting for it to come to fruition, so that we could take advantage of this opportunity. The project extends just south of Church Street on Main Street and extends north up to Deland Park A,” said Fairport mayor Julie Domaratz.

The mayor says the work will include reconstructing sidewalks, crosswalks, and curbs as well as some facades. It will also include the replacement of trees and flower beds in the area.

Renderings from the village’s engineering partner, CPL, show a concept for the project. As Domaratz describes, residents and visitors shouldn’t expect an exact replica of those images.

“This video you’ve seen is a concept video, so don’t take it that Main Street is going to have glass storefronts versus the Village Landing. It’s a concept video to explain what this project means to our village, which is an incredible investment in our community that will benefit residents, visitors, and our merchants alike,” she said.

While the work is still in planning stages, the mayor says they will primarily aim to preserve the village’s rich history and make the area more accessible to all.

“It is long past due for us to have had this kind of project in our village. And you know, it’s just transformative to the general look of your community,” said Domaratz.

Those interested in learning more about the Main Street project in Fairport are encouraged to visit an open house, which will be held June 24 at 6 p.m. at Fairport Village Hall.
