Primetime 585 Spotlight Team: Fairport boys lacrosse

By in Fairport NY News

FAIRPORT, N.Y. (WROC) — Spring sports are back and this week’s News 8 Primetime 585 Spotlight Team is Fairport boys lacrosse.

The Red Raiders are 2-0 on the season after a hard-fought 5-4 win over Hilton and a convincing 13-4 victory against Schroeder. Fairport led 9-1 at the half, cruising to the win.

“Our biggest focus is just us and getting better from game to game and day to day. We got better from Tuesday to today,” said Fairport head coach Mike Torrelli after the win against Schroeder. “That’s our goal and that’s what we’re going to continue to do. This group works hard and practices hard. They’re a great group, they listen, and they’re very coachable.”

The Red Raiders are led by a balanced scoring attack so far this year, with Jack DuBose, Mitchell Monte, Ryan Pedro, and Sam Pucci each netting three goals.

“We just come in thinking that we’ve got to play as a team,” said Monte. “As an offense, we do a really good job of spreading the ball around and getting everyone their touches. Playing as a team at the end of the day is really what it is.”

Luke Ryan has been strong in net and sophomore faceoff specialist Corey Roeser has won over 70% of his draws.

“I’m just thinking I’ve got to get the ball to myself and I work with my wingmen to get it to the offense and we see what we can do then,” said Roeser.

“My defense really makes my job easy,” said Ryan. “With [Roeser] at the X doing faceoffs, with our offense being dominant, it allows me to have an easy job and it makes me and the rest of the defense look good.

Fairport will have their work cut out for them this week when they take on Canandaigua and West Genesee. Congrats to the Red Raiders for being this week’s Spotlight Team.
