Tips on being safe during Winter Storm

By in Fairport NY News

The holiday weekend winter storm has arrived! Thank you to all of our local first responders, public works crews, lineworkers, essential workers, and others, who are out there keeping us safe.

Please read the following storm information and tune in to local news for the most up-to-date info.

Due to high winds, icy conditions and downed power lines, Monroe County has issued a travel advisory. Please avoid any unnecessary travel. If you must travel, treat any dark stop lights as a four way stop.

Our Department of Public Works has been out on salt runs and they remain busy cleaning up downed tree limbs. DPW is staffed and can be reached at (585) 223-5115 or the After Hours Emergency number is (585) 425-7380.

RG&E has reported customers in Perinton without power. At this time, most have been restored. Supervisor Hanna will remain in contact with RG&E and Fairport Electric throughout this event and provide any important updates.

We encourage residents to consider these important tips during a wind event when a power outage occurs:

If your power goes out, contact your provider first. If you have RG&E, call 1-800- 743-1701. If you have Fairport Electric, call (585) 223-9500.

Track and report RG&E outages by going to rge.com. [please note RG&E may be experiencing website and app outages]

Track Fairport Electric outages through the Village of Fairport Facebook and Twitter pages.

Only call 911 if the power outage has caused a life-threatening event.

Do not touch downed power lines.

If using a generator, be sure to operate it outdoors and have it ventilated safely outdoors to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

Check on elderly friends, family, and neighbors.

Have emergency supplies ready: food, water, flashlights, firewood, and medication.

If you rely on electricity to operate medical equipment, make alternative arrangements.

Do not leave candles unattended.

Bring pets inside.

Secure garbage totes, patio furniture, and outdoor items.

Stay safe!
